Becoming a Hospice Volunteer

Volunteers are an integral part of the patient’s care team. They provide care wherever a patient calls home, which can include nursing homes, assisted living communities or private residences. Volunteers describe their work as gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful.

There are many ways to contribute your time, talent, and experience as a volunteer.
Below are a few examples of the many key roles volunteers play throughout the organization:

Support for patients.

We’ve found that family members really appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through – and that’s exactly what our volunteers are. This can include visiting, reading, taking walks, writing letters, interpreting for those who do not speak English, bringing in music or art. Volunteers with necessary certification can also provide pet or massage therapy, notary services, haircuts and styling. Veteran volunteers can help with organizing public or bedside salutes in honor of our Veteran’s service and sacrifice. Volunteers can also assist with creating life story/memorial videos for families.

Respite and support for family members.

Volunteers can assist with shopping or light household maintenance, or allow family caregivers the opportunity to take care of necessary errands, exercise, or simply have some time alone. Volunteers can also help care for a family pet.

Bereavement support programs.

Hospice volunteers can work closely with the hospice’s bereavement staff. Duties may include assisting a support group facilitator, serving refreshments, or helping with mailings to families.

Administrative work.

A volunteer with clerical skills can serve a hospice by helping in the office with administrative duties. Responsibilities can range from preparing mailings or thank-you letters to answering phones, running copies and filing charts.


Some volunteers can use their personal attributes to help increase public awareness about hospice and palliative care by networking, staffing information tables and providing presentations relating to the hospice philosophy.

How much of a time commitment is required?

After training is completed, you can determine how much time to commit to your assignment, and you will define the geographic area(s) you would like to serve. Because the duties of volunteers vary, we will help you find an opportunity that is convenient for you. Whether you dedicate as little as two hours per month, or 8 hours or more per week, all efforts are greatly appreciated!

Special requirements

Sonoran Winds will fully train you for your volunteer role, however you must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance if you plan to visit patients. You must also pass a criminal background check and TB test (both provided by Sonoran Winds Hospice). Once you have satisfied all requirements, your volunteer schedule is extremely flexible. We will work with your availability.
