How Will I know When It’s Time to for Hospice?

Here are some indicators it’s time to talk with your doctor about hospice:

  • An increase in pain, nausea breathing distress or other symptoms
  • Rapidly deteriorating health
  • Involuntary or significant/ rapid weight loss
  • Repeated hospitalizations or trips to the emergency room
  • Failure to “bounce back” after medical setbacks occur
  • Decrease in function requiring assistance for walking, eating, bathing, dressing and going to the toilet
  • Decreased alertness, emotionally withdrawn, sleeping more or having difficulty with comprehension
  • Significantly decreased appetite and weight loss
  • Patients who have been given a limited life expectancy if the disease follows its natural course

Here are some indicators that your family would benefit from hospice services:

  • You are overwhelmed by the myriad of physical, financial, emotional and spiritual concerns arising because of the illness
  • You or your caregivers are physically and/ or emotionally exhausted from caring for you or your loved one
  • You or members of your family appear to need more emotional support to cope with the sadness of the situation
  • Your family is being isolated because of caregiving demands or the uncertainties you feel about your loved one’s future
